Nate and I have our spare key all alone in a dish by the door where it is destined to be lost. I know a key chain doesn't keep a key from getting lost (if only!) but a colorful key chain will distinguish it from any other random keys we have floating around and make it easier to spot if it gets misplaced.
This is a fairly quick and simple project. It takes almost no materials. A key ring (or two), a tapestry needle (I think mine is size 18 or 20), scissors, and 1 skein of embroidery floss (or two for contrasting colors). I'm not sure how durable this key chain is, but on a spare it will be lightly used so I think it will hold up for a while.
I chose gold and dark teal threads. |
Remove the labels and double up the loop |
Tie a piece of thread around the top of the loop. |
Double knot it. |
Wrap one side of the thread around several times. |
It will look like this (still with two tails). |
Tie the two tails in a double knot. |
Thread both tails in a needle. |
Weave them up through the binding part and clip. |
Snip the loops open and trim. |
My top is a little wonky. No prob. |
Thread some tassel color thread. |
Weave it through the top loop and tie. |
Slip on a ring. |
Double knot the ring on.. |
Thread both tails in the needle. |
Weave it back down through the binding. |
Clip to the length of the other tails. |
Tada!! |
I added a larger ring to fit on a hook if needed. |
