My cousin and I have a saying, "every time I want a disappointment, I order a margarita". I have had a mostly miss relationship with margaritas. They are often too sweet or too sour, made from a horrible mix or from fresh fruit and waaaay over priced. I finally decided enough was enough I'd make a good one at home.
Well that was much harder than I thought it would be. I tried out several recipes never really liking any that much and I started to feel some sympathy for those sour mix marg serving places. I ended up asking my friends if any of them had a really good margarita recipe (knowing we all shared similar drink standards) and they delivered! I followed this recipe from the Food Network.
I skipped the over the top salt, subbed out half the amount of agave syrup for the simple syrup and added the full teaspoon of orange liqueur. Sure 3 ounces of tequila is a lot... but it really makes it. If you simply can't abide that much booze you could knock it down to 2 ounces, but anything below that and the ratio is way off. Even at 2 ounces it's not as good. Better to make a single drink and split it into two if you must.
It took me 1 1/2 limes to get 2 ounces of juice. Not too bad!
I really like a salted rim. Use kosher salt, rub the rim with a lime slice and dip into a dish of salt. I like to shake off the excess after dipping.
Ice added. I used a shaker to combine the ingredients because I wanted the agave syrup to be completely combined.
Poured! Enjoy slowly hehe
