Another Look at Reusable Cotton Squares

I've been using these since I made them about six months ago. I have some revisions and notes.

1. The flannel I picked feels ok, but still not soft enough.

2. I can feel the scratchy stitches when I rub these on my face.
3. They are not good at getting around the delicate eye area when removing things like tough eye liner.
4. They vanish in the laundry.
5. Because of #4, I never have enough.
6. I end up still needing disposable cotton rounds for removing nail polish.

Despite the drawbacks listed, I'm not ready to give up on these at all because I feel with a few tweaks some of the above problems can be solved. Yes I'll still need cotton swabs for removing eyeliner (when I wear it) but I need those for ears anyway. I don't paint my nails much, but it could be possible to devote a true rag to that cause... these are too cute for me to ruin with polish.

1. faux suede fabric with batting in middle. Super soft, low pile.

2. silky stitching closer to the outside.
3. mesh zippered bag for collection and washing.

I used this white faux suede as my fabric this time. So SOFT.

I bought this because it was craft sized and claimed to be cotton. Hmm. Well when I ironed it, it definitely melted a little. Boo... I used it anyway since I wouldn't be ironing these in the future.

Soft pile sides together and a single layer square of cotton batting.

I used this rayon 40wt. thread in a warm white. It's very silky so I wondered if it would snap, but it proved strong!

I used the 1/4" piecing foot to assemble the square.

I used a zipper foot to do the top stitching, so I could get as close to the edge as possible.

The process is much like the first time I made these, regardless of the batting middle. I really did not stitch the top very well haha! But it won't affect it's usefulness.

When I use these I notice a little more "slip" between the fabrics. I think a stitched X across the center would anchor the fabric more and provide a better grip. I still do prefer this fabric over the flannel. It's much softer. If you want a more scrubby pad, you'd probably like the flannel best!
