Mint Julep

While it's still warm out (it is in Denver anyway) lets have a summer drink. This is the season that divides people. You'll either hear "Yes! More warm days, more!" or "ugh, not another hot day. I have baking to do!" I'm in the latter category... But really you can't change the weather, so how about we just roll with it.
This must be made with Bourbon. Though there are LOTS of 'authentic' ways to make this drink that's a constant. There are actual fights on recipe comment sections about how you are really supposed to do this. I won't say I'm an aficionado, because I'm totally not. Also I think this version tastes good and taste is why I am doing it. I like Southern Living's take on the julep but ultimately use a recipe more like the one found here on Esquire.

This is my favorite Bourbon.

The Kentucky Derby website uses a mint simple syrup rather than muddled mint. I have never, I repeat never, gotten a simple syrup to have a strong flavor. I like strong flavors, so I muddle.

Gently muddling mint and sugar.

I don't have access to crushed ice. Yeah I know I can get an ice bag or use a bar towel and smash the crap out of it. But I also didn't want to do that with thin apartment walls so I always used these tiny ice cube trays instead to skip the hassle. Maybe now that I have a house I can smash away!

Mmm. So refreshing!
