This whole glycerin craze started with adding a few drops of glycerin to my night time moisturizer (I use Egyptian Magic cream). It made such a noticeable difference that I figured, why not make an awesome glycerin based serum! I recommend you try just the plain glycerin on your face before you make a serum, just to see if you like it before shelling out. This serum can be personalized to your face and what ingredients you have on hand.
I happened to choose ingredients that all came from LotionCrafter! What are the odds! I feel like it's pretty hard to get everything you need for a project from one supplier. I went with some Willow Bark Extract for possible exfoliation, some Green Tea Extract for possible anti-inflammatory benefits and Q-MAX™ Coenzyme Q10 for possible anti-aging.*
Because Coenzyme Q10 is oil soluble, we need something to enable it to blend with all of our other water soluble ingredients. I went with Cromollient SCE because it can emulsify a small amount of oils and has its own benefit of imparting a mild emollience.
Unlike a normal serum where you apply it first to your skin then layer on the thicker products of your nightly regimen, I recommend just adding a few drops of this to your palm along with your moisturizer, blending them in your hands and applying them to your face together. This serum is in no way light. It's very sticky and kind of heavy. It would not work for day and I can only imagine what a disaster it would be under make up! It should also be noted that this serum does best in a humid environment. When the air is dry there is no water for the glycerin to draw to your skin. I use a pretty serious humidifier, but even a small one would improve your night time air during the cold winter months!
I used 3% for all my extracts to make it easy to divide into thirds. 3% is within range for all except the Green Tea, which is recommended no higher than 2%. I bumped it up a touch to make it easier on my formulation, but you could keep it at 1.5% and divide that into thirds still. As always, don't neglect your preservative!
Something I did differently here, I mixed straight into the bottle. I only wanted to make 33.3 grams (about one ounce) and didn't want to waste any of these nice ingredients. I had a never used small glass bottle so I just weighed everything into that! Coenzyme Q10 is very orange.
Ewww, green tea and Coenzyme Q10 look like barf!
Glycerin added. Very pretty suspension.
I added a treatment pump top for ease of distribution. I use about one pump on my face a night. As always, if you use this and something seems off about your skin, stop use immediately. You know your face better than anyone else after all!
