Remember way back, when I made a whiskey sour? Kind of a crappy one with powdered sugar? That was before I learned the powdered sugar is partly corn starch, and has no place in a cocktail*. Regardless of my humble whiskey sour beginnings, this remains one of my favorite drinks. If the whiskey sour was the beginners drink, the Boston Sour is the expert.
A Boston Sour is a whiskey sour with an egg white. If you don't want to add egg, use the same recipe to whip up a really delicous Whiskey Sour.
Did you know if you change one ingredient in a cocktail it becomes a whole new cocktail? A pet peeve of mine is when people say “this is how I make _______ drink”. By cocktail etiquette you should rename the cocktail if you change it. Once altered it is no longer that cocktail. The biggest “offendee” seems to be the Sidecar. People love to improvise that drink; which is great, just don’t call it a Sidecar anymore! Make up some new fun name! The one exception seems to be the margarita, it’s acceptable to add your change to the margarita name (ie. Strawberry Marg).

1 oz Lemon juice | ||
1 oz Simple syrup | ||
1 egg white | ||
Cherry for garnish |
I’m currently pretty into using condiment squeeze bottles for everything. I keep juices in these, flavored oils, homemade mayo, and pretty much any sauce or syrup.
Personally I enjoy the regular bright red maraschino cherries. It’s like American cheese though, you can love it (and I do love American Cheese) but it has a time and a place. This is not the time for the bright red candy cherries. This calls for something a little more adult. These are still really sweet and candy like, but they retain a taste of actual cherries! I get these at Sprouts. Other specialty stores carry similar cherries, or you could go holy grail with these.
Regular ol’ egg. Wash the outside if you are paranoid.
There is no need for an egg separater, the egg has one built in!
Set your yolk aside for hollandaise, meatballs, or your pets! One of my kitties LOVES a yolk mixed with a small amount of water.
Seperated egg white! Don't be scared...
2 ounces Bourbon.
Lemon juice.
Not shown, (because I can't shake and photograph) shake one time around without ice -called a "dry shake", then add ice and shake again.
Pour through the strainer.
Cherry ghost.
*seriously, please don’t. If you don’t want to take the time to make simple syrup, purchase some extra fine bakers sugar. It dissolves more easily than powdered sugar and lacks the cornstarch.
