A Paloma is an alternative to the usual margarita. I've heard it's traditionally (in Mexico) made with Squirt grapefruit soda instead of grapefruit juice and soda water. I use grapefruit juice and soda water most of the time since it's what I have around! So thus "one way" to make a Paloma.
Obviously you can make it sweeter by adding more syrup and less sweet by omitting it all together (which I do sometimes). To pick a ripe lime- look for a thin skinned, lighter colored fruit with no stippling. A lime that is very green and has deep stippling may look pretty, but it will not have the most or sweetest juice. The stippling rule is true for all citrus fruits, the smoother it looks the riper it will be. Oops! Forgot to picture the soda water below. I recommend Canada Dry Club Soda if you are buying a bottle. I have bought the very cheap store brands and they go flat after opening them once. Canada Dry stays bubbly the longest. If you are getting cans or mini bottles, it doesn't really matter. If you'd like to avoid the sodium in club soda, use seltzer water.
