Blood Orange & Chocolate Old Fashioned

Happy V Day! Whether or not you enjoy Valentine’s Day, hopefully you will enjoy this drink. Today I have a twist on an Old Fashioned using chocolate Aztec bitters and a blood orange. An old fashioned is a very booze forward drink that isn’t for everyone. Though boozy, it is sweet with added sugar and fruit. If you’d like to make this but can’t do (essentially) straight alcohol, you can top with a splash of water or seltzer water… but only if you must.

This drink is medium-low on the difficulty level. There are a couple techniques you’ve seen before here, like: saturating a sugar cube with bitters, muddling and making a twist. I’ll go through them again just in case. I've mentioned it before when making the Hot Toddy, when a drink is quite old (old enough it's origins are up for debate) often the ingredients, measurments and methods are also up for debate. This is how I make an old fashioned, but it might not be how you do*.

BLOOD ORANGE & CHOCOLATE OLD FASHIONED

2oz Rye or Bourbon
1 orange slice
1 sugar cube
3-4 dashes chocolate bitters
1 lemon twist
1 maraschino cherry

Start with a rocks glass/old fashioned glass. I used a whiskey snifter, really any small glass works.

Add a single sugar cube to the bottom and saturate it with chocolate bitters.

Then, using your muddler, firmly tap on the sugar cube until it starts to break apart. Muddle it to combine sugar and bitters.

You don't have to be gentle as with sugar (like you should with fresh herbs or fruits).

Add an orange slice and gently muddle it. You just want to press some of the juice out and press on the rind a little to release the oils.

You can see the orange still holds its shape and hasn't been smashed to bits.

Add ice.

Pour over 2oz of whiskey. Stir with a bar spoon to combine.

Use a vegetable peeler to make a lemon twist.

Rub the twist around the mouth of the glass and drop in. Add a cherry and enjoy!

*I believe most people only use the orange peel, not a slice. They also add extra water to the drink, which I am not a fan of. An ice cube or two provides just enough water.
